Giles Abbott came to storytelling in 2000 after sudden & serious, but not total, sight loss in 1998 deprived him of the ability to read a book (or see anyone’s face across a table). Giles heard traditional storytelling by the Shaggy Dog Storytellers in a pub in West Yorkshire & fell in love with the art. Since then Giles has been a featured headline performer at numerous festivals such as Wilderness, Festival At The Edge, Whitby FolkWeek, Beyond The Border, Westcountry Storytelling Festival, Sting In The Tale Festival, Oxford Storytelling Festival. In London, where he lives, he has performed in the Southbank Centre, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Queen Elizabeth Hall & in many clubs, arts centres & theatres around the UK. Internationally he has worked in Holland, Germany & Egypt several times & did two fortnight-long British Council storytelling tours around India. He was Storyteller in Residence for Chelsea Community Hospital Schools from 2006-12, Storyteller in Residence at The Last Tuesday Society 2010-20.
He has written & starred in “The King”” an award-winning short film by Fred Casella, has won Arts Council funding for national tours of traditional storytelling & also original pieces based on historical figures such as “AO Hume – A Life”, “Tongues Of Flame – Capt. RF Burton” & “Alexander Pope – A Search For Perfection”. Last year he created & taught, with Arts Council backing & for RSBC, “Blind Tellers”, an Arts Education project which worked with young blind & partially-sigthed participants on literacy & oracy skills, boosting confidence & creativity. Giles is a Voice Teacher, & has taught at Arts Ed., ALRA, Birkbeck College. He currently teaches at Identity School of Acting & at CityLit.
He is a Voice Artist, voicing campaigns for numerous corporate & commercial clients & he voiced several characters in “Sunny Bank Allotments” (or Gardens if you’re on Amazon Prime). He has had poems published in national & small press magazines. He likes Marmite but doesn’t want to fall out over it.
