Richard Hamilton has worked for the BBC as a journalist since 1995, and has been a correspondent in Morocco, South Africa and Madagascar. He was also the Africa Editor for BBC World Service radio. He is now the general international news reporter for The Newsroom programme. While living in Morocco from 2006 to 2007, Richard co-authored the Time Out Guide to Marrakech and has written throughout his career for magazines and newspapers such as Conde Nast Traveller and The Cape Times.
His first book, “The Last Storytellers: Tales from the Heart of Morocco” was published by IB Tauris in 2011 and has sold more than six thousand copies. The book is a collection of traditional tales from Marrakech and has received excellent reviews in publications such as the Observer, the Times Literary Supplement, the New York Journal of Books, the National and Lonely Planet. It also received a personal recommendation from King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
His second book is called “Tangier: From the Romans to the Rolling Stones.” It is a cultural history of the city, as seen through the eyes of writers, artists and musicians who lived in Tangier over the centuries. He is also curating an online collection of stories from across the world, called The House of Stories.
Richard studied at St Paul’s School in London, gained a BA degree in Philosophy and Greek at Bristol University, a law qualification at the College of Law, a postgraduate diploma in radio journalism at the London College of Printing and an MA in African Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies.
