Órla Mc Govern is a Storyteller, Performer and Writer at home in The West of Ireland.
She tells all sorts of stories, from original to folk to found to improvised, and has a particular draw to the ones with a liberal sprinkling of truth, magic and mischief! In Galway, Órla founded Moth & Butterfly, an innovative night that combines the forms of Storytelling & Improvisation, and described as ‘Galway’s warmest arts night’
She has told for audiences large and small including at Cape Clear Storytelling Festival, Westside Arts, Body & Soul, Irish Festival of Oulu, Finland, Galway Theatre Festival, Irish Museum of History, Yarnspinners Dublin, Ballyeamon Barn, YARN @ Mermaid Arts, Triple Spiral, The Artists’ House, at Listowel Writers’ Festival (where she was awarded first place for her original tale in the Eamonn Kelly Memorial Story Session), and at numerous schools, cafes, castles and hedges around the globe!
Órla also facilitates workshops in storytelling and improvisational theatre around the world, for all sorts of folks (from schools, to theatre companies to corporate clients). She loves workshopping with children and adults, and is constantly delighted by watching the creative spark light up the room.
She has written several plays, and also works as an actor and Voice Artist. In 2018 she founded The Black Phone Box, an intimate audio storytelling installation work that appears at festivals and in odd nooks and crannies!
Órla has written two storytelling books, published by The History Press: ’Dublin Folk Tales For Children’, and ‘Wild Waves And Wishing Wells’. When she’s not telling stories, Órla loves to swim in the sea, whatever the weather, whenever she can!
