Kung Jaadee is Roberta Kennedy’s traditional Haida Indigenous name. Her cousin Crystal gave it to her at her great uncle’s memorial feast. He was hereditary chief of her clan.
Her Hawaiian auntie gave her a Hawaiian name, Hi’ilawe, after a waterfall on the Big Island.
Both parts of her Haida name are used at once, as together it means moon woman. It sounds like Kung-juh-day.
She is in her 31st year of telling traditional legends, and singing traditional songs. She speaks her Indigenous language to audiences.
She wears her traditional clothes, called regalia when she performs. Most of it is made with wool.
