A poet and prose writer of Romany, Irish and Welsh descent who shares tales of the English Gypsies (Romanichals) through poetry, monologue and song. She will share the story of her Great Grandfather, John Ripley who was born under a gooseberry bush and went on to have twenty-one children. She’ll take you inside the vardo where the Pookering Kosh is used in a ritual, and you’ll travel to Kent and Herefordshire to the hop fields where Raine’s family picked hops, pulled poles and drank fine beer. Some of these poems were featured in the documentary film, ‘Stories From the Hop Yards’ by catcher Media in 2018 and premiered at the Ledbury Poetry Festival. She’ll be joined by her husband Simon Callow, who will play the guitar and piano. Light the yog, draw your chair close and join in with the Gypsy lullabies.
Raine Geoghegan, MA, poet and prose writer lives in the Malvern Hills with her husband Simon Callow. She is a Forward Prize, Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee. Her work has been published all over the world in both journals and online. Her two pamphlets, ‘Apple Water: Povel Panni’ and ‘they lit fires: lenti hatch o yog’ are published by Hedgehog Press and are available on her website: rainegeoghegan.co.uk.
Simon Callow is an International musician, having worked with Angela Brown and the Mighty 45’s; George Benson; China Crisis; Don Mclean and others. He teaches piano and plays in a Blues band.
